A move by the Philippines Justice Department to charge investigative news site Rappler with tax evasion is being seen as a thinly disguised attempt to stifle press freedom in the South East Asian country, according to CNN. The Philippines’ justice department said on Friday it had found cause to indict the online news site and its top executive. The justice department said it “found probable cause” to indict Rappler for violation of the country’s tax laws after it did not declare gains made in its 2015 tax returns. Earlier this year, The Philippine government has revoked the operating license of Rappler. Authorities said the media site, which has two US investors, had violated a clause in the constitution that limits media ownership to Philippine citizens.
