President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo addressed the prevalent issue of student bullying during the 23rd Congress of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) held at the Sahid Jaya Hotel in Jakarta on Saturday, March 2, 2024. President Jokowi urged schools not to cover up bullying cases to protect the institution’s reputation. He emphasized the importance of schools being a safe haven for students. “Schools must be a safe house, a secure place for our students to inquire, create, and play. There should be no fear, pressure, or discomfort for any student. Bullying is not allowed,” stated President Jokowi. “Prioritize the resolution of bullying cases; don’t cover them up. Bullying cases are often concealed to preserve the school’s reputation. I believe the right approach is to address the issue,” he added. In a related development, the Ministry of Religious Affairs for East Java Province revealed three cases of violence against students in Islamic boarding schools at the beginning of 2024, resulting in the unfortunate death of two students. Simultaneously, the South Tangerang Police identified suspects in a bullying case at Bina Nusantara (Binus) School Serpong, involving 12 individuals. Four of them are now suspects, while eight are minors facing legal consequences. President Jokowi also extended his message beyond bullying, urging teachers to prepare the younger generation of Indonesia for the demographic bonus in 2030. “I never tire of reminding you that Indonesia has the opportunity to leap into a developed country during the demographic bonus. Be careful not to get stuck in the middle-income trap,” cautioned the President.

He further encouraged teachers to contribute to enhancing the capabilities of students in schools, emphasizing the need to leverage the demographic bonus by improving the quality and productivity of the younger generation.
