The Myanmar military has essentially formalized a human trafficking racket under the guise of military service, with ward administrators, police, auxiliary fire brigades, and soldiers operating as localized cartels, according to Progressive Voice 11 September. No one in Myanmar is safe from the illegal military junta’s predatory conscription campaign. It has violently expanded beyond its original demographic targets to sweep up students, women, urban civilians, migrant workers, and even newly released political prisoners. Facing catastrophic battlefield defeats, defections, and heavy casualties, the illegal junta is aggressively escalating forced recruitment. Through brazen daytime kidnappings, mafia-style extortion, and severe mobility restrictions, it hunts youth to use as human shields and cannon fodder on its depleting frontlines. To protect these young people and end the military junta’s absolute impunity, the international community—particularly ASEAN and Myanmar’s neighboring countries—must take decisive action. This includes ensuring robust protection for those seeking temporary refuge and completely cutting off the junta’s access to the financial resources, weapons, and aviation fuel that drive its terror campaign. To fill its quotas for Conscription Batch 28 in September 2026, the junta has abandoned all legal pretenses in favor of a vast, lawless toolkit of abduction. As documented by monitoring groups, the junta’s methods now include violent home invasions, fraudulent job postings designed to traffic youth, and the deliberate targeting of early-morning and nighttime commuters, including gas station workers and cargo conductors. In Mon State, junta forces abducted 222 youths for Batch 28, bringing the total number of forced conscripts from the state to at least 5,800 since Batch 1. These abductees—who include underage youth and overage men arrested under the pretext of curfew violations—were held at the No. 46 Naval Flotilla in Mawlamyine. The junta is increasingly weaponizing false charges to coerce enlistment.
During rural raids, troops falsely label civilian youths as People’s Defense Force (PDF) members, forcing them into a lethal ultimatum: face imprisonment and torture, or join the military.
