It costs up to 15 times more to earn the Indonesian citizenship than to renounce it. Indonesia will charge up to Rp 75 million ($4,180) for foreigners applying for Indonesian citizenship under a new government regulation taking effect in August, while Indonesians seeking to renounce their citizenship will pay up to Rp 5 million ($278). Government Regulation No. 30/2026 on Non-Tax State Revenue at the Justice Ministry sets a maximum fee of Rp 75 million for each application to become an Indonesian citizen, with the amount varying depending on the legal pathway. The fee for voluntarily renouncing Indonesian citizenship is capped at Rp 5 million. The new regulation, signed by President Prabowo Subianto, also revises a wide range of non-tax state fees collected by the Justice Ministry. Director General of General Legal Administration Widodo said the regulation was issued partly to reflect the ministry’s name change from the former Ministry of Law and Human Rights. “There are hundreds of fee categories. Some remain unchanged, while others have been adjusted,” Widodo was quoted as saying by the Kompas news website on Monday.

Widodo said one fee category had been eliminated — the charge previously imposed on foreigners granted Indonesian citizenship for reasons of national interest. He did not specify whether the provision would apply to foreign athletes, including footballers naturalized to represent Indonesia. He added that the revised fees were introduced to reflect changing economic conditions. “The adjustments were made in response to economic developments,” he said. Under the regulation, foreigners applying for Indonesian citizenship through marriage will be charged Rp 25 million per application. A Rp 5 million fee applies to children born to mixed-nationality marriages, children born in countries that recognize jus soli citizenship, and dual nationals choosing Indonesian citizenship. The regulation also sets a Rp 1 million fee for applications to regain Indonesian citizenship. Indonesians seeking to renounce their citizenship through a petition to the president will be charged Rp 5 million.
