President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo recently asserted that developed nations need to assist their developing counterparts in mitigating the impacts of the climate crisis through technology and financing. The call to provide more climate support to developing countries was made amid a disagreement among the world’s major economies on commitments to reduce fossil fuel use, cut greenhouse gas emissions and increase renewable energy targets. Jokowi attended the Group of 20 (G20) Leader’s Summit in New Delhi on Saturday, in which he told attending leaders that it was necessary for the world to fulfill its pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to prevent the worst outcome of the climate crisis. “We all have to walk the talk because we only have one Earth” Jokowi said, according to a Presidential Secretariat statement on Saturday. The planet has repeatedly broken global temperature records, and this July was declared the hottest month since records began. The temperature will continue to rise unless the world addresses the issue with a “massive and radical” approach, Jokowi argues, by transitioning the world economy to a low-carbon system. But such a transition is believed to be costly for developing nations, which will need support from developed countries, the Indonesian President said. “We, the developing countries, want to speed up the efforts to reduce emissions, but we also need support through technology transfers and green investments.”
