The release of ousted President Win Myint from prison has been greeted with widespread relief across Myanmar’s political and resistance circles. Social media quickly filled with prayers and messages celebrating his freedom. Yet the moment of joy was tempered by a sobering reality: Win Myint had already served most of his sentence, and thousands of political prisoners remain behind bars. His release came as part of a New Year amnesty that freed more than 4,500 prisoners, including over 100 political detainees. The announcement immediately raised a far more consequential question: will Aung San Suu Kyi be next? Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s former State Counselor and the country’s most revered democratic leader, remains imprisoned. In recent days, rumors circulated—likely seeded by the regime’s psychological warfare apparatus—that she would be transferred to house arrest. The reports proved false, though they appeared designed to test public reaction. Her sentence was reduced as part of the same amnesty, but her detention continues. At 80, Suu Kyi had been serving a 27-year sentence—reduced by one-sixth as part of the amnesty—under a raft of charges widely viewed as politically motivated, ranging from corruption and incitement to election fraud and violations of the state secrets law. The reduction of her sentence has done little to clarify her fate. Whether she will remain in prison, be transferred to house arrest or quietly disappear from public view remains unknown. Suu Kyi has not been seen since her marathon trials concluded in December 2022. The last confirmed public account of her condition came in July 2023, when then Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai met her in Naypyitaw and reported that she was in good physical and mental health and supportive of dialogue to resolve the crisis. Since then, silence. She is widely believed to be held in a military compound near Naypyitaw under medical supervision.
