Senate president Hun Sen has asked Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing to consider organizing a video conference between himself and former Myanmar civil government leader Aung San Suu Kyi for the purpose of paying an “online visit”. Hun Sen made the request during a May 7 video conference with Min Aung Hlaing, chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC). The meeting was held to share updates on recent developments in Myanmar. A social media post by the Senate president said that during the meeting, Min Aung Hlaing shared his appreciation for Hun Sen’s participation. The former prime minister visited Myanmar and tried to contribute to resolving the Myanmar issue during his chairmanship of ASEAN in 2022. “I have once again requested Min Aung Hlaing to consider holding a video conference between Suu Kyi and myself. She and I have been colleagues for many years, and have discussed many ASEAN affairs,” he said. During the meeting, Hun Sen also stressed the importance of implementing the ASEAN five-point consensus, and hoped that the implementation of the consensus would contribute to the peace finding process, with Myanmar itself as a leader and owner. Hun Sen’s social media post said Min Aung Hlaing had agreed to continue sending non-political representatives to ASEAN meetings and had pledged to give his utmost attention to considering other proposals. Min Aung Hlaing announced that he will send a special envoy to Cambodia in the near future to continue discussing these proposals and to obtain experience from the National Election Committee (NEC) on how to organize a free, fair and transparent election.
