Siem Reap is gearing up for the highly anticipated second ‘Angkor Equinox’ of the year. This renowned architectural and tourism phenomenon occurs twice a year, drawing global attention as the sun rises in perfect alignment directly over the central tower of Angkor Wat. The Siem Reap Provincial Administration Friday finalised details for the upcoming Angkor Equinox, scheduled for September 21-23. To complement the biannual solar event, local authorities are introducing a running program alongside the main sightseeing schedule. Siem Reap Deputy Governor Ngov Sengkak chaired a planning meeting with representatives from local departments, provincial units, and relevant jurisdictional partners. Speaking at the meeting, Sengkak announced a new side event to complement the upcoming solar spectacle: an early-morning running program officially named the ‘Angkor Equinox Run.’ Scheduled for the early hours of September 21 — the first day of the equinox — the run will kick off at the Royal Palace Stone Bridge and head toward the Angkor area, allowing participants to finish just as the sun rises in perfect alignment over Angkor Wat’s central tower. According to official estimates, the upcoming equinox celebration is expected to attract 5,000 to 10,000 local and international tourists. The press statement added that the Angkor Equinox Run is not only a running event, but also an activity that combines sports, health, tourism, culture and humanitarian activities. The event aims to promote public health and athletic participation while showcasing Siem Reap’s “green season” tourism.
