Candidates to pledge commitment on graft eradication

JakartaPost-Jan 15, 2024

The three candidate pairs for the 2024 presidential election will reiterate their commitments in the country’s skirmish against corruption through a graft prevention event held by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) slated for this week. The event, called Strengthening Anticorruption for State Apparatus (Paku Integritas), was first launched in 2021. It is a program under the antigraft body’s deputy for public education and participation comprises a series of training, discussions and consultations with various stakeholders and anticorruption experts for state officials, including from ministries and other institutions. For this year’s event, presidential candidates will hear presentations from the KPK on the state of corruption in the country based on several indicators, such as the corruption perception index (CPI), and challenges to fighting the crime. They later will share their ideas and sign an integrity pact by the end of the event.  “Each candidate will convey their commitment to the corruption eradication agenda and sign an integrity pact [on fighting graft],” KPK spokesperson Ali Fikri told reporters on Jan. 9. He added that all candidate pairs – Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar; Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD – had confirmed to the antigraft body their attendance at the event at the KPK headquarters in Jakarta. Representatives of the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) will also attend the event on Wednesday. “[We] hope each candidate will explain at least [their] strategic plans, as well as more technical steps [for eradicating corruption] than what they have promised on previous occasions,” Nurul said recently.
