Phnom Penh’s ‘Beer Bus’ – whose service was halted last week by Phnom Penh police who stated it caused havoc on public roads and upset social order – has rebranded itself as an ‘eco-friendly exploration’. The ‘Beer Bus’ tourist operation, run by foreign entrepreneurs – that promised to help drinkers “Explore Cambodia like never before, the Beer Bus way!” was stopped by authorities last week, pursuant to the order of Lt. Gen. Chuon Narin, Deputy Commissioner General and Phnom Penh Municipal Police Commissioner on February 20, 2024. The police said that “along Sothearos Street, in Chaktomuk district and areas of Daun Penh, the vehicle is causing anarchy on the streets and affecting social order.” “There are also some social media users who commented on the Police Commissioner’s page expressing some unhappy comments on the action of the police who do not encourage or promote the tourism sector,” the police said. In another subsequent statement, police stated that “Drinking beer, singing, and dancing in public places while travelling on the streets, urges others to join in and affects public safety and order. The authorities are reinforcing preventive measures to stop traffic accidents occurring through drinking alcohol,”. Police also ordered the proprietors of the venture to come to the Chaktomuk Administrative Police Station and to stop these drinking activities on public roads.
