President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo emphasized the need for the anti-money laundering agency to remain vigilant against sophisticated methods of laundering illicit funds, including the use of crypto assets and non-fungible tokens. Referring to international research, Jokowi highlighted on Wednesday that the amount of laundered money concealed in crypto assets globally has reached Rp 139 trillion or $8.6 billion. “Money launderers are continually evolving their techniques, and it’s imperative that we do not allow them to outsmart or outmaneuver us,” Jokowi said during a ceremony commemorating the 22nd anniversary of the National Movement against Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing in Jakarta. “I urge the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) and other relevant agencies to enhance their collaboration and pursue innovative approaches.” The president commended the PPATK for its efforts in combating money laundering, leading to the agency’s full membership in the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing in October last year. This membership reflects international acknowledgment of Indonesia’s effective regulations and collective efforts against money laundering and terrorism financing, the president said.
