Singkawang, a city in West Kalimantan, has once again been named Indonesia’s most tolerant city for the third consecutive time by the human rights group Setara Institute. nIsmail Hasani, Managing Director of Setara, revealed that the survey encompassed 94 cities nationwide, considering factors such as local government policies and actions, existing regulations, and social norms. “While the performance of city mayors was a top consideration, we also evaluated the behaviors of locals, clerics, social leaders, and civil communities,” Ismail said in Jakarta. The institute recognizes cities that actively bridge cultural gaps, prioritize religious tolerance as a fundamental value, respect personal freedom, and make efforts to minimize the risks of sectarian and ethnic conflicts. Political, social, and bureaucratic leadership played pivotal roles during the survey, according to Ismail. Among the ten cities with the highest perceived tolerance levels, four are located in Central Java.
