Abdul Gani Kasuba, the North Maluku Governor, was arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) during an operation at a Jakarta hotel on Monday evening, just 13 days before concluding his second term and retiring with honor. The anti-graft raid took place at Bidakara Hotel in South Jakarta, occurring three days before the governor’s 72nd birthday. KPK spokesman Ali Fikri confirmed on Tuesday that 15 individuals, including provincial government officials and businessmen, were apprehended during the operation. The commission has yet to confirm if any of them will be classified as corruption suspects pending the results of the preliminary investigation. “All individuals are currently undergoing interrogation. We will provide updates as the investigation progresses,” Ali said. The spokesman did not disclose specifics regarding the ongoing investigation. Abdul, an executive of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), previously served as a House of Representatives member from 2004 to 2007. He ascended to the position of vice governor in 2008 before successfully contesting and winning the 2014 gubernatorial election. Despite his public service, Abdul’s financial disclosure reveals him to be among the least affluent governors, possessing a personal wealth estimated at just Rp 6.45 billion ($416,000).
