Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong suggested on Sunday a general election may be called next year, more than a year before his government’s mandate ends, as the city-state braces for growing economic uncertainty amid global trade tensions, Reuters reports. The last general election in Singapore was held on 11 September, 2015, months after the death of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. The ruling People’s Action Party won nearly 70 per cent of the votes cast, its best showing since 2001, a result partly attributed to the patriotic feelings from Lee’s passing, according to Yahoo News. Lee’s People’s Action Party (PAP) has only two years left to prepare for the next General Election.
