Malaysian Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has dropped another bombshell, claiming that the previous Barisan Nasional government had not refunded a total of RM16 billions (US$3.9 billion) of excess income tax and real property gains tax to taxpayers – with some being owed these refunds for the last six years, The Star Online reports. To relieve the taxpayers’ burden, the government has agreed to allow taxpayers who have outstanding tax refunds to make an application to set-off the amount against the tax payable for the current year, according to the New Straits Times. Back in May, Bloomberg’s Andy Mukherjee cautioned Lim that he was no longer an opposition politician, and that his tell-all approach, though winning points for honesty, was having the opposite effect on investors.
