Seventy-six Myanmar civil society groups called on Tuesday for the release of two jailed Reuters reporters, denouncing their conviction as unfair and an assault on the right to freedom of information, Reuters reports. The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (Wan-Ifra) and the World Editors Forum also condemn the sentencing of the journalists, calling it as a sign that democracy in Myanmar still has a long way to go. The wives of the two journalists insisted their husband’s innocence, arguing that they were only doing their jobs. The journalists can appeal the conviction, and the lawyers told the news conference they were considering all options.
