Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday withdrew the amnesty for opposition senator Antonio Trillanes, involved in a failed coup 15 years ago and ordered his arrest, in what would be the second detention of a lawmaker critical of him, Reuters reports. In October 2010, then President Benigno Aquino III signed Proclamation No 50 granting amnesty to Trillanes, who led the 2003 Oakwood mutiny and the 2007 Manila Peninsula siege against the administration of then-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, writes Rappler. Arroyo, who is Duterte’s political ally, was elected speaker of the lower house of Congress in July, a move analysts said would further consolidate Duterte’s grip on power.
