The Indonesian government is considering house arrest or other forms of clemency for the ailing radical cleric, who was the ideological leader of the Bali bombers and is now in prison for helping to fund an extremist training camp. Abu Bakar Bashir was relocated to a hospital for medical treatment over his declining health on last Thursday. According to this lawyer, the 79-year old cleric is ready to serve house rest. Guntur Fattahilah also said that his client never held a weapon before; hence, putting him under house arrest would not pose a danger to the public, but National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) deradicalization director Irfan Idris voiced concern about the plan, saying that Bashir had never participated in a de-radicalization program and that his teachings were dangerous.
