Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Monday that overseas buyers would no longer be allowed to purchase homes in the US$100 billion Forest City development by a joint venture of Malaysian and Chinese companies in Johor, The Edge Markets reports. The Forest City project had courted controversy because it was aimed primarily at high-net worth investors from China. Mahathir had repeatedly criticised the project in the past on grounds that it brought no value to Malaysia and had the potential to severely alter Johor’s demographics, Malaysia Kini reports. The project owner, Country Garden Pacificview Sdn Bhd (CGPV), said the media report on Mahathir’s statement was premature, arguing that it may have been taken out of context.
