United States President Donald Trump may visit Malaysia after the 33rd ASEAN Summit in November, according to National Security Council senior director for Asian affairs Matthew Pottinger, the first Trump administrator to visit Malaysia since the country’s historic general election in May, during a media round-table in Kuala Lumpur. Trump was among the first world leaders to congratulate Mahathir on his being sworn as the new prime minister of Malaysia after his political coalition won a stunning victory in the country’s 14th general election. In December, Mahathir called Trump an “international bully” and a “villain” for his move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
