Typhoon Damrey tore across central Vietnam over the weekend, just days before the APEC summit of Asia-Pacific leaders was expected to begin. The Vietnam National Search and Rescue Committee said at least 61 people were killed and 28 were missing. The Standing Board of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee has decided to allocate VND3 billion (US$132,000) to south central and Central Highlands provinces which were just hit by storm Damrey. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked authorities and agencies to quickly repair critical damage to infrastructure and provide accommodation, medical and food aid.
