U T Khun Myat was elected new Speaker of Myanmar’s House of Representatives (Lower House) in a Parliament session held in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday, according to parliament sources. The election was held to fill the vacancy left by U Win Myint who announced his resignation from the position on Wednesday. The latter is tipped to replace President U Htin Kyaw, who resigned on Wednesday from his position after two years in office. Htin Kyaw sudden resignation is a worrying development for the country’s future, according to Bridget Welsh, a political science professor at John Cabot University, especially as a crescendo of criticism engulfs de-facto ruler Aung San Suu Kyi.
