MORRISON PLAYS DOWN ISRAEL EMBASSY SPAT WITH INDONESIA

Scott Morrison said he cannot say when he will sign a free trade agreement with his Indonesian counterpart, Joko Widodo, with the timing for that in Jakarta’s hands, but he has suggested trade should not be conflated with other issues, The Guardian reports. Australia has raised the prospect of following the United States by relocating its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a policy shift that critics described as a desperate grab for domestic political gain to win a crucial by-election. Former Australia Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has taken a thinly-veiled swipe at the Morrison government’s decision to consider moving the Australian embassy, warning of a “very negative reaction” in Australia’s near neighbour and a risk to the national interest.
