Malaysia cannot accept same-sex marriage or lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Saturday, adding that the country does not subscribe to such Western values, The Star reports. Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim yesterday said he shares Mahathir’s view, but reiterated that colonial-era sodomy laws can be abused and need review. Amnesty International has previously warned that the wave of homophobia and transphobia would result in further human rights abuses against LGBT people in Malaysia. It also argues that discriminatory acts are grossly at odds with the Pakatan Harapan government’s stated commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusiveness across Malaysian society.
