Duterte Faces Nationwide Revolt over Drug War

The brutal killing of 17-year old Kian Loyd Delos Santos in the Philippines last week has sparked a nationwide revolt against state-led war on drugs under President Rodrigo Duterte, reports The Telegraph. His killing has united the public, senior politicians and the Catholic Church into the most significant sweep of mass protests. The US ambassador to the Philippines, Sung Kim, has also called for “full accountability” following the alleged murder by local police of a 17-year-old boy during a drug raid. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Duterte said there could have been abuses by police officers in his government’s war on drugs. Duterte’s so-called war on drugs has killed more than 7,000 people in 12 months since he assumed office in June last year.
