The Philippines’ justice department has dismissed complaints against several high-profile drugs trade suspects because of weak evidence, according to documents reviewed by Reuters. Among the 22 people cleared were businessman PeterGo Lim and Kerwin Espinosa, who were arrested by Abu Dhabi police in October 2016. Kerwin is the son of the late Albuera mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr, who was murdered in a police operation inside a Leyte sub-provincial jail in Baybay City on November 5. Espinosa Sr and another detainee named Raul Yap, who was also being served a warrant for allegedlt trafficking drug, reportedly resisted arrest during the operation. A firefight ensued between the arresting authorities and the two inmates, which resulted in the detainees’ deaths, according to the initial police report.
