The Malaysian cabinet has approved a controversial Bill to counter fake news and plans to table it in parliament next week amid fears from the opposition that it will be used to crack down on dissent ahead of looming polls. Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah wonders if the government will use the proposed fake news law to silence critics of 1MDB. He said Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Jailani Johari’s statement that any unverified information about 1Malaysia Development Board (1MDB) was considered fake news seemed to indicate this. Johari warned the foreign media to stop putting out fake news on 1MDB, which has been mired in scandal over its debts and alleged leakages said to have funded luxury purchases and movie productions.
