Myanmar’s civilian president, Htin Kyaw, has resigned with immediate effect “in order to take rest from the current duties and responsibilities”, his office said in a statement posted on Facebook on Wednesday. According to sources of The Myanmar Times, Lower House speaker U Win Myint, 66, a long-time serving member of the National League for Democracy (NLD) has already resigned from his position to replace Htin Kyaw. The civilian president called in an Independence Day speech in January for reform of a military-drafted constitution and for justice for all recognized minorities under a federal system, but made no mention of the treatment of its Rohingya Muslim people.
