Vietnamese singer and activist Do Nguyen Mai Khoi, an outspoken campaigner for free speech, was detained at the capital Hanoi on Tuesday after flying home from Europe, her husband said. News of her detention emerged when her Australian husband Ben Swanton posted on her Facebook page that she had texted him to say she was being held at the airport, despite denials by security officials there. Mai Khoi has long been described as Vietnam’s Lady Gaga. In more recent years, as her political activism and her expressions of rude dissent have come to the fore, she has also been compared to Russia’s infamous protest band, Pussy Riot, writes Matthew Clayfield for Sydney Morning Herald.
