US MIDTERM ELECTION RESULTS COULD SPELL TROUBLE FOR ASIA
The US midterm election results might be good news for Democrats, but it could spell trouble for Asia as President Donal Trump, who has not succeeded in midterms is likely to act more erratically, Eurasia Group founder and president Ian Bremmer as quoted by The Straits Times. Analysts writing for CNN argue that China is one of the few policy areas where there is some bipartisan consensus. The Democrats broadly agree that the US should take tougher action against the rising power across a range of fronts, from the military, to trade, intelligence and diplomacy. However, if Trump were to re-introduce tariffs on the European Union or withdraw his country from the World Trade Organization, Democrats could conceivably intervene, writes Nyshka Chandran for CNBC.
