Higher education in Thailand has entered a new, perilous era. Before 2007, the demand for college education was much greater than the available places. This demand was sustained by high fertility rates and parents’ desire for children to join the ranks of the privileged. Since 2017, the situation has changed markedly, with demand plummeting to the point where only 230,000 out of 300,000 university seats were applied for this year.
