A United States lawmaker proposed a bill suspending aid to the Philippine military and police because of the human rights situation in the country under President Rodrigo Duterte. Democratic Rep. Susan Wild (Pennsylvania) authored and filed the Philippine Human Rights Act backed by 23 other lawmakers. In her sponsorship speech on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila), Wild emphasized Duterte’s “brutal regime” that has been using the pretext of the controversial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, which was aggressively pushed by security officials in the Philippines.
