When the verdict on the Maguindanao massacre case is handed down on Thursday, Dec.19, 2019, one person will take the spotlight — Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 211. She will decide the fate of the 197 accused tagged in the slaughter of 58 people on Nov. 23, 2009, 32 of them journalists. Solis-Reyes, an alumna of the University of Santo Thomas (UST), was not the first judge to whom the case was raffled.

The case was filed on Dec. 1, 2009 before the Cotabato City Regional Trial Court, but on December 3, then-Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera asked the Supreme Court to transfer the venue of the trial to Metro Manila to prevent a “miscarriage of justice.” On December 8, the Supreme Court en banc approved the transfer of the trial venue to Quezon City.
