For the first time in Philippine football history, the country has qualified for the FIFA World Cup. This achievement was attained when the Philippine women’s national football team (PWNFT) defeated Chinese Taipei 1-1 (4-3) in the knockout quarterfinals of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in India early on Monday (Philippine time). Also advancing to the tournament’s semifinals for the first time in history, the Filipino lady booters earned their World Cup ticket by going toe-to-toe against the Taiwan team in regulation time and in overtime. Coached by Aussie Alen Stajcic, PWNFT members were jubilant over the hard-won match, screaming at the top of their lungs and shedding tears of joy. In high spirits, the Philippines faces South Korea in the knockout semifinals on February 3.
