Government needs more experts on information technology to battle the growing threat of cybersecurity, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Information and Communications Department said on Tuesday. Col. Walter Icaro, commander of the Armed Forces’ Cyber Group, said that government needs to invest in cybersecurity. They need to get experts in the field. However, Icaro lamented that the government loses quality cybersecurity experts to private companies here and abroad due to low salary. “We need to invest in cybersecurity on critical infrastructures,” he said at a forum titled “Establishing a strong and credible cyber defense posture in the Philippines.” He said that there is an urgent need to develop the cyber workforce, which becomes challenging because of the low government salary. Icaro said that the government should conduct training to cope with the ever-evolving cybersecurity and cyber threats. “What the government needs is to invest in the training of new recruits, fresh graduates and train them. We need to provide scholarships to our new graduates and develop them into a good cyber workforce to protect the government institutions and the private sector,” he said. Information and Communications Technology Undersecretary Paul Joseph Mercado acknowledged the problem with IT employees leaving for better pay elsewhere. He said that they are working out a measure to ensure that the employees trained by the government will stay for a longer time. Mercado said that presently the Department of Information and Communications Technology is engaging a third party with the private sector because the experts are there.
