US Vice President Mike Pence expressed the Trump administration’s strongest condemnation yet of Myanmar’s treatment of Rohingya Muslims on Wednesday, telling leader Aung San Suu Kyi that “persecution” by her country’s army was “without excuse”, Reuters reports. Separately, a senior White House official told reporters on condition of anonymity that Pence pressed Suu Kyi “multiple times” to pardon two Reuters journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who are jailed in her country. On Thursday, a few of the more than 720,000 Rohingya who fled slaughter, rape and village burnings in their homeland last year are due to be repatriated to Myanmar from Bangladesh, a situation deemed dangerous by the United Nations and rights group, The New York Times reports.
