Whenever a Myanmar citizen hears the word Panglong it brings a slew of memories and images to his or her mind, depending on who the citizen is, which ethnic nationality they belong to, and of course where they live.

Panglong is a small town in Shan State, the biggest state in the Union with the largest number of ethnicities and a raft of armed ethnic organisations. For most of the older generation, Panglong is associated with a small but significant conference, at which General Aung San and a group of ethnic leaders drew up a road map to a federal union and made pledges to have a nation of equality, justice and prosperity.
