The Malaysian government must be transparent about its decision to cancel the KL-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project, former prime minister Najib Razak said in a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, arguing that it could jeopardize the future of the country’s economy. On the KL-Singapore HSR, new Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the cost of the project still outweighs the benefits for now, although Malaysia may revisit it after the country tackles its debt. The Malaysian government has set up a trust fund called Tabung Harapan Malaysia or Hope Fund for members of the public to donate money to help the new government to repay the country’s debt. The new government recently announced that the national debt amounted to RM1 trillion (US$250.8 billion), or 80 per cent of GDP.
