Seven decades and a year ago this day, General Aung San, adoringly called by his fellow countrymen Bogyoke, was gunned down along with eight colleagues by assassins, who were driven by nothing less than the craze for power.

The great loss for the nation came on a rainy July 19, 1947. At the prime age of 33, Bogyoke and six leaders who were striving for the country’s imminent independence, along with two loyal staff, were brutally assassinated in a building now simply called the old secretariat.
