During a Wednesday lecture in Singapore, where she was on a four-day visit, State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi called for the amendment of Myanmar’s military-drafted constitution, emphasizing that Myanmar’s transition to democracy can only be achieved if the charter is changed. Myanmar’s 2008 Constitution includes provisions that ensure the Tatmadaw’s hold on power, including automatic allocation of 25 percent of the 664 seats in parliament to military representatives, and its control of the country’s three security-related ministries – Home Affairs, Defense and Border Affairs.
