Malaysia’s Registry of Societies has banned the political party of former premier Mahathir Mohammad from campaigning for 30 days, a move that could dent his challenge to Prime Minister Najib Razak in the coming election.  Najib has been accused of resorting to “dirty tricks” and “downright cheating” in the run up to the general election, after he pushed through a series of moves that would favor his party and allegedly target his critics. Malaysia’s parliament on Monday passed a law prohibiting fake news that critics fear will be abused to silence dissent ahead of a general election.
