Allowing greater press freedom is a major aspect of the reforms that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Ministry will undertake, said its new minister, Gobind Singh Deo. He said the media in the country should be allowed to criticize the government. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said earlier this month that although the new government supports the freedom of the press, reporting by the media should be done within certain limits. In a separate occasion, Mahathir said he will redefine a controversial anti-fake news law introduced by his predecessor. The legislation, brought in just before last week’s election, was criticized as undermining freedom of speech.
