Ratna Sarumpaet, the Indonesian anti-government activist who lied about being assaulted to cover up cosmetic surgery, was detained by Jakarta police last Friday night and will be held for the next 20 days, The Straits Times reports. Sarumpaet — the campaign head for controversial opposition leader Prabowo Subianto — said she created the assault story to hide the cosmetic work from her friends and family, and explain the swelling and bruising to her face. The story turned political when Prabowo met with Sarumpaet and denounced the assault as a “human rights abuse”, according to ABC. Quoted by Tempo, Deputy of the National Campaign Team of Jokowi and Ma`ruf Amin, Johnny G. Plate, stated that the hoax made by Ratna Sarumpaet was old-fashioned politics that undermined democracy.
