The Malaysian government will pass a resolution that would make it compulsory for a permit to be obtained before houses of worship are built, Bernama reports. These include mosques, temples and churches, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad told reporters on Wednesday. Mahathir has warned Malaysians not to abuse freedom of speech in the aftermath of riots that took place near a Hindu temple in Selangor earlier this week. The thugs who roughed up devotees at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple were hired and paid between RM150 and RM300 each, said Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, as quoted by Asia One. Investigations revealed that the riot was triggered by a dispute between the temple’s committee and a developer, who is the owner of the land where the temple is located.
