A former columnist for state media has been jailed for seven years for “abusive” Facebook posts about Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a court official said on Wednesday, the latest case threatening free expression in the country, Channel News Asia reports. Ngar Min Swe, also known as Sar Min Swe, was found guilty in the Yangon Western District Court on Monday of inciting hatred against the government in his Facebook post of January 24. He did not have a lawyer but represented himself in court, according to Myanmar Times. Last week, Suu Kyi defended the conviction of two Reuters journalist, saying that it had nothing to do with freedom of expression and that they could file an appeal against their seven-year sentences.
