The president of the Philippines has ordered that two journalists be banned from entering the presidential palace, an act one Filipino reporters’ rights group described as “appalling and extremely unbecoming” of a president. Duterte said he felt “betrayed” by Rappler reporter Pia Ranada, whom he said he treated like his granddaughter, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said. In a statement, Rappler described the move as “another instance of power attempting to intimidate independent journalists.” It praised Ranada for her courage in “asking the tough questions that demand clear answers.”
