ASEAN celebrated its 51st anniversary at the ASEAN Secretariat on Wednesday with a series of community and youth engagement events, celebrating solidarity and continued unity and integration across borders. The celebration was highlighted by a commemorative ceremony at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta. Founded in 1967 during the Cold War, ASEAN steadily weathered storms to become a stable 10-nation bloc, which now draws Asian and world powers in annual gatherings and is forecast to become the fourth-largest economy in the world in three decades. Internally, ASEAN member states are still struggling to finish all the work required to reach One Community based on One Vision and One Identity, partly because the regional grouping is made of countries with different ideological and political systems, writes The Jakarta Post editorial.
