Not many of us may have noticed, but there is an emerging economy that is fast becoming the buzzword these days, and it is called the gig economy. The gig economy can be understood simply as a work setup of people who have no long-term commitment to or tenure with any employer or company. The gig economy involves hiring independent or freelance workers for short-term engagements. What usually comes to mind is that these workers fall under the blue-collar worker category or predominantly those who do manual labor. Actually, experts and professionals in highly specialized fields are an essential part of it. The old practice of being employed in one or two companies is slowly disappearing. Based on research, ordinary workers today would probably have had multiple job engagements before retiring.
