THE Philippine General Hospital (PGH) has appealed for survivors of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to donate blood to patients in critical condition.

PGH spokesman Dr. Jonas Del Rosario said that they will transfer blood of recovered Covid-19 patients to patients who are in critical condition as the former has antibodies that fight the virus. “These recovered patients, their blood has antibodies which we use to help severely-ill Covid-19 patients in their recovery.” Del Rosario told radio dzBB on Friday. PGH will be the first hospital in the country to attempt a convalescent plasma transfusion, which was reportedly used in the epicenter of the disease in Wuhan City, China to heal patients in severe condition. While the process is still experimental, Del Rosario said that there is evidence that blood transfusion from a Covid-19 survivor might shorten the course of the disease.
