Thirteen seats mean little for a country with over 1,000 parliamentary seats, yet the provisional results of Myanmar’s by-election over the weekend gives a foretaste of the shifting political momentum that affects the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), The Straits Times reports. Provisional results for all but one of the by-elections are now available. The NLD is set to lose at least three seats they hitherto held to opposition parties, while ethnic parties in Chin, Rakhine and Shan are expected to secure electoral victories, according to The Myanmar Times. Many analysts said that the elections in Myanmar should be on the agenda of human rights advocates because the Rohingyas were not permitted to vote.
